Alumni Award

The Alumni Association of Indian Institute of Technology (BHU) recently conferred the Life Time Achievement Award on multi-media artist Manick Sorcar at their 8th Annual Conference held at the PHD House in the Capital. The citation, trophy and flowers were handed over by Union minister of state for railways, Manoj Sinha.

An eminent jury unanimously selected Sorcar for the IIT BHU Alumni Life Time Achievement Award for the year 2013-14 for his outstanding contributions in the field of Cultural and Enlightenment through science and Arts (Illumination for Art/Animation/Entertainment and Social Work).

Sorcar is an award-winning artist in various media, including fine arts, cartoons, animations, laser arts, and world-touring stage shows with live action mixed with laser animation. His animated films, all based on children's stories from India, have won prestigious awards at international film festivals.

Accepting the award Sorcar said, "I attribute to two great sources that made it all happen. The first is my father, the late P C Sorcar, who kindled the fire in me to combine science with art. I had my hands-on experience back stage in doing the intriguing lighting and art design of his world-touring magic shows. It was so fascinating to me that I fell in love with it a lot more than doing magic shows on stage. And the second is BHU, my alma-mater, the all-time great university, which set the foundation for all the technical knowledge in me".
